Squadron Leader Roger Bushell, “Big X”, August 30th 1910 - March 29 1944.

Roger Bushell, for many, epitomises everything generations of Britons have come to admire and respect of a certain breed of men who fought and died in the Second World War. Ruthless, driven and determined to escape from the Germans he loathed so relentlessly he was the mastermind labelled “Big X” behind the most famous escape of all time labelled “The Great Escape”.

This website uses the words of the men who were there to recreate, in so far as is humanly possible, the life they lived in the POW camp cut from a wood in the Upper Silesian dust bowl that is Sagan.

Many use the terms ‘Stalag Luft III’ and ’The Great Escape’ Camp as interchangeable terms. While the world may know of the Camp due to the highly popular Hollywood film there is so much more to Stalag Luft III and what went on there. This sites aims to pay respect to the men of Sagan and at the same time educate future generations of the sacrifices made by others for the future of generations to come.
